This hotel is a contradiction. It is rated three stars. The dining room is worth fiv stars, some of the best food I have ever eaten. The breakfast however gets zero stars. Cold bacon, dry eggs. The room was clean but very spartan. Lacking any but the essential facilities. No hair dryer. No pictures on the wall. A weird looking steel locker room type locker for clothes. They forgot my wake up call. Had I been meeting a flight I would have been in trouble. Fortunately I awoke without the call but they seemed not to be worried. Otherwise the front desk was helpful, polite, and cheerful.

This used to be a backpacker heaven, and I used it a couple of times. Now it's a bit up-market. They renovated the place, and it still has that strange huge warehouse atmosphere, although as a result, it is now a series of shafts connected with long corridors, which is very confusing and disorienting. Also, the smaller rooms can be really cramped as a result, although you could say that it has a cozy attic feel... Location is not ideal, it's a bit off from the center. The price isn't cheap, but relative to the other offerings in Amsterdam, it's still not a bad value, and the lobby, staff, the restaurant (and breakfast) are very good, so overall, it's nice, especially if you want to avoid cookie cutter five star hotel type of accomodation and want something with originality.

The hotel is trying with some measure of success to be hip, trendy, modern and minimalistic. This is true true for the hotel decor, bar and restaurant etc., but the rooms could also be described as small, sparse and unwelcoming. Food, drink, service etc were all very good and friendly. Situated quite a way from the main points of interest but this is a plus point as the area is quiet, relaxed and more upmarket than some areas of Amsterdam. A great hotel for the last drink after a long day's sightseeing.

The hotel did not know about the reservation I made through [website]... Great rooms: very high ceiling, spaceous, beautiful wooden floor and no-nonsense. Everything necessary is there, but no more.

The hotel is about 15 mins with the tram from centraal station, not difficult to find, just ask the conductor or the driver they all know the hotel. The service is friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is very generous, must try! The communal areas are very impressive.

The party that I was with felt that the hotel was situated in a architecturally beautiful building with great facilities.

When we arrived they could not find our booking and after 20 minutes advised this was due to spelling of name, this seems strange as the printed booking confirmation clearly had the correct name on it. We had booked two large rooms but only one room was large the other room was medium/small. The large room smelled of cigarette smoke (badly) and was cold, the heating was off which was poor as the room was occupied previous to us and they knew this room would be occupied again. There was no heating unit in the bathroom which made it very cold and there was no floormat/towel. Towels where worn and had holes in it. There where cigarette stains on the furniture and furniture was chipped and stained. Large piece of nose dirt (bogie) was on bedside table!!!!! Beds where comfortable. there where no coffee/tea making facilities in room or hairdryer, ironing board/trowser press. Restaurant was excellent and we had no sound disturbances from the nightclub/bar. overall 2/5

Hotel Arena - for a tourist location - is acceptable by use of tram etc, there is limited amount of other facilities - you probably need to jump a tram approx 5 minutes walk or a 10 minute walk back into the centre to find alternatives. Working in the central city adds approx 20-25 minutes with tram time and walking to reach Central station I very relaxing hotel - close to the musems and galleries. etc
