Old Church, {CATEGORY}

Odd perhaps, but the Oude Kerk (Old Church) really is in the centre of the red-light district. Surrounded by cobblestones on which you can slip and fall on a rainy day, the church has maintained its medieval appearance, despite being stripped of its decoration during the Reformation in the early decades of the 15th century. The story goes that in the mid-13th century a dying man regurgitated a host he had received at communion which they then attempted to burn but failed. The host was kept in another chapel, the chapel then burnt down but the host once again survived. Since then, pilgrimages have been organized to commemorate this miracle. The Stille Omgang is an annual event which still takes place today annually around March 15th. This nocturnal procession ends at the Oude Kerk. Please check the website for services and tower-visit timings.

Old Church, {CATEGORY}

This triple-nave, late-Gothic church - its official name is Sint-Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas's Church), but nobody ever calls it that - was begun in 1250 and essentially completed with the extension of the bell tower in 1566. Then, in 1578, Protestant reformers destroyed much of its Catholic ornamentation. On the southern porch, to the right of the sexton's house, is a coat of arms belonging to Maximilian of Austria, who, with his son Philip, contributed to the porch's construction. Rembrandt's wife is entombed in vault 28K, which bears the simple inscription "Saskia Juni 1642". The church contains a magnificent Christian Müller organ (1728) that's regularly used for recitals. An inscription over the entrance to the marriage chapel warns all who enter: 't is haest getrout dat lange rout (Marry in haste, repent at leisure). Nowadays, the pretty gabled almshouses around the Oude Kerk feature red-fringed windows through which can be seen the scantily clad ladies of the Red Light District. On a guided tour, climb the 70m (230-ft). church tower, which holds a carillon of 17th-century Hemony bells, for great views of Old Amsterdam.
