Permanently saved from commercial development by an Act of Parliament in 1816, the park was completed in 1830 after the Nor' Loch was drained. Today it is a favorite area for a stroll and a verdant short-cut to the Castle.

Princes Street Gardens, {CATEGORY}

Another drained loch freed up land between Old and New Towns that is now filled by the Princes Street Gardens, the most-used outdoor public space in the city. The banks are steep but grassy and great for a quick bit of sun, should it shine. In wintertime, there is usually an ice rink set up and often part of the park is used for various food and gift markets. With Edinburgh Castle above, this is one of the most photographed parks in Europe.
