Susannah Place Museum, {CATEGORY}
The Rocks assumed an unsavory aspect soon after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Yet it also became home to countless, working class families, many of whose men folk worked on the wharves, and developed a strong community network. Almost inexplicably, a row of four terraces dating from 1844 has survived in Susannah Place. The transition to museum complex relied very heavily upon oral history research among former residents and is remarkable because the buildings have been stabilized but not restored.

This museum, set around a terrace of four houses built in 1844, is a real highlight of The Rocks area. It provides visitors with the opportunity to explore domestic working-class life from 1844 to 1990. The modest interiors and rear yards illustrate the restrictions of 19th-century inner-city life. The many layers of the paint finishes, wallpapers, and floor coverings that have survived provide a valuable insight into the tastes of the working class. The original brick privies and open laundries are some of the earliest surviving washing and sanitary amenities remaining in the city. There's also a delightful little shop selling cordials, postcards, old-fashioned candies, and knickknacks. Allow 45 minutes.
