Museum of Applied Arts, {CATEGORY}
This spectacular building (designed by Lechner) caused much controversy when it opened. Today it is generally considered a masterpiece, although it has been considerably toned down over the years. Lovers of architecture and interior design simply must visit. The displays inside are almost all temporary but there is a permanent exhibition of Hungarian arts and crafts. It is worth noting that this was only the third such museum in the world (the first being in London, the second in Vienna).

You have to see this building and not just from the outside. Even if you are not interested in the collections, walk into the lobby and take a peak. It makes me think of what being inside a wedding cake must be like. Architect Ödön Lechner was the designer of the museum along with Gyula Pártos in what is called Secessionist or Hungarian Art Nouveau in the 1890s. The roof is done in Zsolnay ceramic tiles. Lechner left his stamp in other parts of the city as well as the country. If you like this building, visit the former Post Office Savings Bank on Hold utca. Permanent exhibits, which are made up of antique decorative arts from all over Europe, are divided into five sections: furniture, textiles, metalwork, ceramics, porcelain, and glass, and an eclectic display of books, leather, and ivory. I find the temporary exhibits far more interesting than the permanent ones, which are fortunately given more space. Unlike the other museums, you have to pay the special exhibit price when there is one to enter the regular collection. Regardless, you have to see the interior.
