Gold of Africa Museum, {CATEGORY}

The blingiest addition to Cape Town's list of indoor diversions, this museum houses a collection of African gold artifacts purchased from the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva for R11 million. Created in Mali, Senegal, Ghana, and Cote d'Ivoire during the 19th and 20th centuries, the pieces here represent a refreshing change from the chiefly Eurocentric designs available commercially, and the intention is to foster an appreciation for and pride in African design. The museum is housed in the historic Martin Melck House, constructed in 1781 as the parsonage for the pretty Lutheran church, located next to the house. If you're truly interested, you can even sign up for one of their weekly courses, such as a Byzantine jewelry-making workshop where you'll make a gem-studded chain out of brass or copper (3hr., R400 per person). Targeting tourists, the Gold restaurant here turns out tasty pan-African flavors and presents drumming lessons as part of the predinner entertainment.
