Budapest Holocaust Memorial Center, {CATEGORY}
Opened in 2004 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust, this is the first government-funded Holocaust memorial center in central Europe. Architecturally, it is a combination of classical and modern creating asymmetrical lines. All of the distorted symmetry is intentionally symbolic of the warped, perverse history of the Holocaust. In the center is a refurbished eclectic-style synagogue that was originally designed by Leopold Baumhorn, a famous architect of synagogues at the turn of the 20th century. The space has a permanent exhibition, a research center, and an excellent bookshop with many English selections. Temporary exhibitions are local and international. A large wall surrounds the courtyard serving as remembrance for the Hungarian victims of the Holocaust. The names of the victims are engraved onto the glass wall
