Brücke Museum, {CATEGORY}

This small museum is worth the trek out of the city center. It houses the works of the Brücke Group, considered to be Germany's pioneers in Expressionism. The group was founded in Dresden in 1905, but later moved to Berlin. The permanent exhibition includes works by all the members of the group—Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emile Nolde, Otto Müller, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Max Pechstein. Nazi repression in the 1930's lead to the destruction of many of the group's works—but what has survived is fascinating.

Brücke Museum, {CATEGORY}

Some of our all-time favorite German artists, especially Ernst Kirchner (1880-1938), have a museum devoted to their work. The art movement, Die Brücke, originated in Dresden in 1905 and rejected the emerging modern trends of the 20th century, turning once again to landscapes, folk art, and other retrograde sources for inspiration. This school was an influential predecessor to 20th-century expressionism. Although exhibits change, this museum presents an extensive collection of these expressionist works, including art by Max Kaus, Walter Gramatte, Otto Herbig, and Anton Kerschbaumer. Today, the Brücke Museum owns around 400 paintings and sculptures of the era, along with thousands of prints, watercolors, and drawings, although not all the treasure trove can be displayed at the same time.
