Column of Constantine – Turkey
Column in Turkey a monumental column in Istanbul, Turkey. unvieled on 11th May 330AD as the centrepiece of the Forum of Constantine in the new capital (Constantinople) of the Roman Empire by Constantine the Great. Originally there were three additional marble drums on the top of the column and on top of these a statue of Constantine dressed as Apollo. The statue was blown off in a hurricane in the 13th Century. It was replaced by a cross which was then removed after the fall of Istanbul to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. In 1779 a fire destroyed most of the area around the column and left it covered in black scorch marks leading it to be known as the Burnt Column. After this fire a new base was added around the column. It may have been at this time (not sure) iron bands were added to help hold the column together, these bands were replaced in 1979. A restoration project was started on the column in 2004 and was ongoing still in 2007. Today the column stands to a height of 35metres, but the original base of the column is 3metres below the modern ground surface.
