Angel Mounds - Mound G – United States

Artificial Mound in Vanderburgh County, Indiana Mound G - Angel Mounds, Conical Earthwork Mound. Woodland period. The mound is conical. When measured by surveyors in 1805, it was measured at nearly 200 feet in diameter and 25 feet high. Its size is not much diminished. This mound lies outside the town stockade of Angel Mounds, and is estimated to be much older, probably from the Woodland period (500 BC to 500 AD.) It's never been systematically excavated although looters and the just plain curious have dug small holes into it over the years. The mound is directly on the city street and was completely accessible until a few years ago when a short fence was put up to provide a psychological barrier if nothing else. The photo shows that right now that fence is down to allow fallen trees from tornado damage to be cleared.
